Black Wax 12 is up!

New show is ready to go! Some of these tracks have been nearly picked for the past few weeks but left behind. This week they get a well deserved airing, especially Do Me Bad Things… what a track! And here’s a secret especially for those reading this blog – I didn’t mean to play the Graham Coxon Libertines cover. The 45s have the wrong labels on and I didn’t listen to enough of it when queuing up to realise it wasn’t the right song!

Never heard it? Well it’s here for you… enjoy!

I didn’t show up to the radio last Sunday. Why? Because something came up… my son! Slade James Smith was born at 14:23 on Sunday 26th March in Harlow’s Princess Alexandra Hospital, weighing 6.9lb.

We were all home the following evening and this week has been bonkers. Bonkers and great. More about that on the next show…

So, that’s the reason your Sunday evening was quiet last week, I won’t apologise – normal service resumes 02nd April, 5pm – 7pm on

Play it loud! x

Black Wax Live! Show 9

It happened! We managed to run a show with a live guest in front of an audience. It’s been the plan from the start and on Sunday 19th March we welcomed people into the live lounge to watch a special session by Murray Torkildsen.

For a show that hasn’t had a tech-hitch free run yet it was a bit of a risk to add a live element into the show, but with some extra help on hand we managed to run smooth transitions between the studio and the live room, with the audience in the live room and everyone tuning in at home hearing the full uninterrupted show. The standard has been set, and we’re already preparing for the next one!

The list of ‘thanks’ is – The guys at Phoenix Community Radio for letting me do this, Sam Russell for running the live PA, the people who listen in at home week after week, the audience that fed their curiosity and came on down to the show, everyone who’s been supporting this venture, and of course Murray Torkildsen for performing.

A special mention also to Andy Lee for signing up to be the official Black Wax photographer. He’s documented the evening wonderfully in the photos below.

So… What ya waiting for!? Here’s the show… play it loud!

Open Decks

Went to the Herald pub in Harlow this eve for their ‘Vinyl Junkies’ open decks night.

Didn’t really know what to expect, but I knew it was a musically open minded pub so packed a small box of mixed records.

Not a busy night by any means but it’s only the second one they’ve done so word will hopefully spread. I played around 40 mins. Was unsure of what would go down well but then one of the good things about a small crowd is that there are less people to impress.

It was a fun night and all the DJs were different, will try and get to the next one if I can though I think the idea of having a theme is a good one so they can pull an audience who are into what’s on. It seemed a bit like DJ club, bring your girl (or boy) friend along.

Anyhow, here’s what I played:

The Stooges – Now I Wanna Be Your Dog

Funkadelic – Hit It and Quit It

Eli ‘Paperboy’ Reed – Cut Ya Down

Ripple – I Don’t Know What It Is But It Sure Is Funky

Betty Harris – Mean Man

Black Heat – Drive My Car

Detroit Cobras – Cha Cha Twist

Imperial State Electric – (Why Don’t You) Leave It Alone

Them – Baby Please Don’t Go

The Seeds – Can’t Seem To Make You Mine

Randy & The Rainbows – Denise

The Standells – Dirty Water

James Brown – Cold Sweat Part 1

Night Trains – No More Heroes

Stevie Wonder – Don’t You Worry Bout A Thing

Pama International – Heatwave
